xTool MetalFab Laser Welder — Available in 800W or 1200W

Professional Metal Welding Made Faster, Cleaner and Easier

Step into a new generation of metal fabrication with the xTool MetalFab Laser Welder. Available in both 800W and 1200W configurations, MetalFab combines powerful fiber-laser technology with an approachable touchscreen-controlled system designed for fabrication shops, repair businesses, artists, makers and serious metalworking enthusiasts.

Unlike traditional MIG or TIG welding, which can require a lengthy learning curve, laser welding concentrates energy into a narrow, highly controlled area. The result is a fast, precise weld with a smaller heat-affected zone, reduced distortion and less finishing work.

MetalFab is capable of much more than simply joining two pieces of steel. Depending on your setup and accessories, the handheld system can perform:

  • Autogenous welding without filler wire

  • Wire-fed laser welding

  • Tack welding

  • Pulse welding

  • Handheld metal cleaning

  • Handheld metal cutting

  • Optional automated CNC metal cutting when paired with the xTool MetalFab CNC Cutter

Both the 800W and 1200W models use a 1080 ± 10 nm fiber-laser source and support continuous-wave and modulated-wave operation.

What Makes Laser Welding Different?

Laser welding delivers concentrated heat precisely where it is needed. Because the surrounding metal absorbs less heat than it typically would during conventional welding, users can achieve:

  • Narrow, consistent weld seams

  • Reduced warping and heat distortion

  • Faster welding speeds

  • Less grinding, sanding and cleanup

  • Cleaner-looking finished joints

  • Improved control on thin sheet metal

  • Strong welds on detailed or appearance-sensitive projects

  • Easier access to corners, seams and irregular assemblies

MetalFab can be used for both filler-wire and no-wire welding. For tightly fitted workpieces, autogenous welding can join the metal without adding filler material. When filling a gap, reinforcing a joint or working with thicker materials, the integrated wire-feeding system delivers welding wire directly to the seam.

Supported welding-wire diameters include 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm, with adjustable feeding speeds from 2 to 100 mm per second.

Metals the xTool MetalFab Can Weld

The xTool MetalFab Laser Welder supports many of the metals commonly used in fabrication, repair work, signage and product manufacturing, including:

  • Carbon steel

  • Mild and low-alloy steel

  • Stainless steel, including common 304, 316 and 430 grades

  • Galvanized steel

  • Aluminum and aluminum alloys

  • Brass

  • Alloy and tool steels

  • Titanium alloys

  • Nickel alloys

  • Bronze

  • Magnesium alloys

  • Cobalt-based alloys

  • Painted or coated sheet, when properly prepared for welding

For common wire-fed welding applications, xTool specifically identifies stainless steel, carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum and brass as supported workpiece materials. Appropriate matching filler wire and shielding gas should always be used for the material being welded.

Welding Capacity

Actual welding performance depends on the metal type, joint design, shielding gas, material preparation, welding speed and selected settings.

800W Welding Capacity

The 800W MetalFab is an excellent choice for sheet-metal fabrication, decorative metalwork, light repair and small-business production. According to xTool’s current supported-material chart, typical welding ranges include:

  • Brass: approximately 0.2–2 mm

  • Titanium alloys: approximately 0.2–4 mm

  • Nickel alloys: approximately 0.2–2 mm

  • Bronze: approximately 0.2–2 mm

1200W Welding Capacity

The 1200W model provides additional power for thicker material, faster production and more demanding fabrication work. Typical welding ranges include:

  • Carbon and low-alloy steel: approximately 0.2–5 mm

  • Stainless steel: approximately 0.2–5 mm

  • Galvanized sheet: approximately 0.2–5 mm

  • Aluminum alloys: approximately 0.2–4 mm

  • Brass: approximately 0.2–4 mm

  • Titanium alloys: approximately 0.2–5 mm

  • Nickel alloys: approximately 0.2–3 mm

  • Bronze: approximately 0.2–4 mm

These ranges are based on xTool’s published material-support chart and should be treated as application guidelines rather than guarantees. Material condition, joint fit-up, shielding gas and operator settings affect final results.

Autogenous welding joins properly fitted pieces without adding filler wire. It can produce a narrow, refined seam and is especially useful for appearance-sensitive work.

Wire-filled welding feeds matching filler material into the joint. This is useful for filling gaps, reinforcing seams and working with thicker materials.

Recommended filler-wire types include:

  • Stainless-steel wire for stainless steel

  • Solid iron wire for carbon and galvanized steel

  • Aluminum wire for aluminum

  • Tin-brass wire for brass

The correct shielding gas, filler wire, surface preparation and machine settings must be selected for each material.

Welding, Cleaning and Handheld Cutting in One System

Both MetalFab power levels can be configured for more than welding.

Laser Cleaning

With the appropriate cleaning configuration, MetalFab can remove:

  • Rust

  • Oxidation

  • Paint

  • Surface contamination

  • Welding discoloration

  • Residue from metal surfaces

Laser cleaning can reduce the need for aggressive grinding, chemical stripping or abrasive blasting on suitable projects.

Handheld Cutting

The welding system can also perform handheld metal cutting for trimming, repair work and freehand fabrication. This is useful when removing damaged areas, cutting openings or making quick modifications to a workpiece.

Optional CNC Cutting

When connected to the optional xTool MetalFab CNC Cutter, the laser source can power a computer-controlled metal-cutting table. This allows users to move from digital artwork to accurately cut metal components and then use the same MetalFab system to weld those pieces into finished products.

The optional CNC Cutter is sold separately or may be included in selected MetalFab packages. Cutting capability depends on the selected laser power, material, assist gas and cutting configuration.
